The town was named for a railroad station that was located near the San Juan Capistrano Mission. It is located eight miles south of downtown San Antonio. The post office in Bergs Mill Texas opened in 1887, closed in 1890, and was reopened in 1892. The town was at the center of the Median Irrigation Project, and at the time it had a population of about 100 people.


Most residents of Bergs Mill live in single-family homes. The neighborhood has a higher percentage of single-family homes than the average American neighborhood. Moreover, the majority of people living in this neighborhood are of Mexican descent, which is significantly higher than the percentage of Mexican-Americans in other neighborhoods in the United States. Visitors to Bergs Mill can visit the Yturri-Edmunds House and Old Mill, which are believed to date back to the Spanish missions. Later, settlers added to these structures on secularized mission lands. In 1837, a prominent black settler named Hendrick Arnold, a member of Stephen F. Austin's 300 colonists, built a mill in Bergs Mill, where wool was washed.


Several mills operated near Bergs Mill. One of them was owned by the Berg brothers. The Berg brothers were principally involved in wool-scouring and cotton-ginning. The stone ruin that remains is no longer in use, but it is possible that the Berg brothers once operated another mill in the area.
