San Antonio, Texas has a history of flooding, and in 1921 it had a record-breaking flood of twelve feet downtown. Many buildings were destroyed, including the city hall, police headquarters, and hospitals, and 51 people were killed. It is considered the worst flood on record and prompted city officials to take steps to control flooding. Read more here.


The city was named by a Spanish expedition for Saint Anthony of Padua, a Portuguese priest. Today, the city is a major attraction for visitors, with the Alamo and River Walk attracting more than 20 million visitors a year. The city is also home to more than thirty charter and private schools. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio operates several parochial Catholic schools in San Antonio, including the Keystone School, St. Gerard Catholic High School, Central Catholic Marianist High School, and The Atonement Academy. San Antonio has over fifty radio stations, with thirty located in the city proper. iHeartMedia, the nation's largest radio station operator, is headquartered in San Antonio. WOAI AM-1200, which is known for its local news operation, is a 50,000-watt clear-channel station that reaches most of North America, particularly at night. KTSA AM-550 is the first radio station in South Texas and was founded in 1922.


Another city attraction in San Antonio is SeaWorld, the world's largest marine life park, located 16 miles west of Downtown. Another major attraction is the San Antonio Zoo. This animal park is located in Brackenridge Park and is owned by Merlin Entertainments. A third animal attraction is the San Antonio Aquarium.


San Antonio has a rich history of cultural diversity. It was once the largest city in Texas, and the city supported an ethnically and economically diverse population. This helped perpetuate its reputation as a "crossroads of cultures." Today, San Antonio is a major tourist destination and has many cultural events.


The city was founded as Bexar County, Texas, and charted as the county seat in January 1837. The 1840 census recorded 339 residents. These included White males over the age of 21 who owned taxable property. There were also 30 slaves. The city's population has grown over the years, from six hundred thousand to 1.2 million in 2005. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was home to the Battle of the Alamo, one of the most famous battles in history.


San Antonio is also known for its outdoor activities. The city has many attractions for outdoor enthusiasts, including the famous Fiesta. Its centerpiece is the River Walk, which is located below street level. It features calm waters, picturesque bridges, and plenty of shade under the large trees.
