In 1691, Spanish explorers landed on the site of San Antonio. At that time, the Payaya Indians inhabited the area. On May 1, 1718, a Mexican expedition named Mission San Antonio de Valero, later known as the Alamo, established a military garrison. The city was an important stopping point between two missions on the Rio Grande and in East Texas. A decade later, the Mexicans invaded the city twice, and the population was reduced to 800.
